Fresno - A Recharge and Repair

This is just a quick overview of our time in Fresno, CA. Mainly because Geoff's friend John requested a whole post on Fresno. Ok!

We chose to stop in here as it's really the only choice between Yosemite and Kings/Sequoia National Parks with a good amount of resources. Good hotels, a Costco (cheap gas for the win!) and some car parts stores. Yup more repairs.

Part of the way through our time in Yosemite the blower on our Heater/ Air Conditioner went out. With our plans to visit Death Valley after Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, no A/C was not an option. So Geoff stood out in 90 degree heat to fix that along with installing some new headlights. We realized, on those extremely windy mountain roads through Yosemite at night, that our headlights sucked.

I hung out in a Starbucks writing blogs while Geoff was slaving away. The staff at both the Starbucks and the Napa Auto Parts store were extremely friendly and accommodating. The baristas asked where I was from and wanted to hear all about our travels. Meanwhile, Geoff was able to repair the van under the awning right at the front door of Napa Auto Parts and not have to move to a different parking-lot or find shade elsewhere.

On our way out of town we stopped in at a Sonic for "happy hour" for half price drinks (Giant slushies!!) and 99 cent corn dogs! I know, I know, but I've never been to a Sonic before and it was REALLY hot out! See! Look how happy I look!

First time at a Sonic Drive-in. It was everything and more. hahaha! Fresno, CA
After Sonic we made a stop at In-N-Out Burger because a trip to California isn't complete without a stop there! As we tried to make our way towards Kings Canyon National Park we were detoured all over town due to some massive protests taking place regarding the recent (and not so recent) violence across the country. Police choppers roamed the skies while officers in riot gear patrolled the perimeter of the protest. The officers directing traffic were far more relaxed and took turns devouring a box of donuts. A small reminder of the world we now live in.

We, however, were headed back out of cellphone range, far away from the heartbreaking news that lights up our computers, televisions and phones every single day. I'm starting to like it that way.

As for Fresno itself. It's a town. It's hot. People drink and eat. That's pretty much it. We felt recharged (and clean!) and now it was time for another chapter in our adventure.

Next up: Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks.

Till next time - Fair winds my friends!

Marsha (and Geoff too!)
